Deer Hunter’s Edge App Review

Check out this Deer Hunter’s Edge App Review where I share my initial thoughts of the product.

I was recently contacted by the developers of the Deer Hunter’s Edge App, a phone application that provides detailed hunting predictions using solunar tables combined with temperature and barometric pressure measurements. They asked me to test and review their app on my upcoming deer hunting trip. Though I have used solunar predictions in the past (with mixed success) I was very interested in the Deer Hunter’s Edge App because it also takes temperature and barometric pressure into account. In short, I’m pleased with the performance of the Deer Hunter’s Edge App so far.

What I Liked About the Deer Hunter’s Edge App

The biggest feature of the app is the fact that it provides easy to use predictions that combine data from solunar tables with barometric pressure and temperature measurements from the specific hunting area. As you can see on the photo below, the app provides an hour by hour prediction for the next 24 hours on a scale of 1 to 10. It also provides other useful information, such as the sun and moon rise and set times for the next day as well as the moon phase and current barometric pressure.

Keep in mind, this is not an “one size fits all” prediction: all of the measurements and predictions are specific to the hunting area, which is a good thing. In addition to the current weather conditions, the program also can also provide a 7 day weather prediction and a 12 hour history of the barometric pressure and temperature for the hunting area.  Additionally, since the program is designed for use on a smart phone, it can provide a hunter with continual updates during the hunt (assuming he or she has cell service), which is another big selling point.

I’ve been using the Deer Hunter’s Edge App for the last two weeks while hunting here in Washington, and the predictions have generally been pretty accurate. I haven’t shot a deer yet (though that’s not the app’s fault), but I’ve seen plenty of deer activity during the times the app predicted elevated animal activity. I was especially impressed twice last week when I encountered large numbers of deer out and about during unusual times of the day (unfortunately, I wasn’t hunting at the time). I checked the app to see what was up, and it displayed predictions of 9 and 10 respectively.

What I Didn’t Like About the Deer Hunter’s Edge App

Unfortunately, the app isn’t perfect. Luckily, the complaints I have about it so far are pretty minor. My biggest complaint is the manner in which you select your location with the app. As you can see below, there are three ways to select your hunting area: through the phone’s location service, by selecting it on a map, or by entering the zip code of the hunting area.

While this usually works, I would really like the ability to select the hunting area from a “Favorites” or a “Recently Used” location menu. In addition to just being more convenient, this option would hopefully preserve time and valuable battery life while using the app out in the field.

Another (admittedly minor) problem with the app is that it only works in the United States. Unfortunately, you are out of luck if you live anywhere else in the world at this time. However, this is something that they are working on addressing for the future.

Even with all of its problems, the Deer Hunter’s Edge App is still a welcome addition to my arsenal of tools to use while deer hunting. Obviously, the use of this app can’t make deer appear where there aren’t any. It also won’t make up for poor hunting techniques, but it can help give hunters an edge when out in the field. Time is a very valuable asset for all of us. You can’t be out in the woods hunting 24/7, but this app can help you figure out the best times to be in your stand and assist you in maximizing every hour of the hunting season.

The Deer Hunter’s Edge App is currently available in iTunes for iPhone users and through the Amazon Appstore for Android users. Though the app is normally $4.99, the developers of the app are offering a promotional discount this weekend. On 11-12 October 2014, the Deer Hunter’s Edge App will be available free on iTunes and $.99 on Amazon.

Like I said earlier, using this app will not magically make you a better hunter or guarantee that you will see deer. However, it can help give you an edge and help you focus your efforts. Sometimes, a slight edge is all you need to make something happen. So far, the app has treated me well. Give it a shot, and maybe it can help you have a successful hunting season as well.
